In 1949 the telephone was also identical in every home — the Bell System saw to it — and so appears on neither chart as a category of taste. The decisive line now runs through the middle: the upper row of the middle takes its taste from institutions — museums, critics, prestige media — and the lower row from platforms: rankings, review scores, the recommendation engine. Price runs diagonally, not vertically: the second row often costs the most, the top row can come from a thrift store, and the bottom row may require a five-thousand-dollar television.
